Yorie, out of focus, surrounded by Antigua Black Pineapples
It’s December 2020, and I think we just snuck onto the Cades Bay Agricultural Station. In our defence, the fence was broken down, leaving a wide enough opening for any passersby to go in and have a look. Also, no one was there to tell us we couldn’t have a look at the Pineapple field. Not just any Pineapple field, but a field full to the brim with Antigua Black Pineapples, the sweetest in the world (Atlas Obscura).
It was the perfect backdrop for photos, which once again I’d been hoarding for the last five years. I had only shared about 4 of these on Instagram, and, finally holding myself accountable, I am sharing a larger photoset with the World.
This trip through my hard drive has reminded me how much I love taking photographs of people, and forcing myself to share them through this medium has also reminded me just how much I missed writing about things that aren’t connected to academia or a legal matter.
Yorie wears a dress my mom had given me and gold bangles from Shop ZoeMercedes (defunct)
I love taking photos of Yorie. I have many photos of her on my iCloud drive because she photographs incredibly well. When the idea came to me to take photos in a field with the iconic Antigua Black, she was the first person who came to mind, and she gladly went along with my vision. When an idea for a photograph plants itself in my mind, whether it’s a simple cellphone photo or a full-blown photoshoot, my brain doesn’t rest until what I capture matches what I came up with in my head.
Looking at these photos now, I am reliving the feeling of joy I had when I got the shots that were running through my mind like a tomb raider.
Here’s what I’ve been holding on to…
There’s another version of this photo in colour in this post
Something about a photo being out of focus in Black and White feels magical to me
I love everything about this shot. My favourite from the Black & White edits.
A superior Landscape shot! (second favourite shot)
I tried to get a tighter shot in portrait orientation, but the subject isn’t quite in focus in this shot; however, it’s still beautiful.
Shot on my Canon T3i with a 100mm lens | In Lightroom, I adjusted the Exposure, Shadows, Saturation and played around with colour mixing to get this rich look.
Look at how her face lights up when she smiles. A star!
If I told you this is a candid shot would you believe me?
A photographer somewhere is seeing this and nagging me about shadows. I know, it’s okay, I quite like this shot THANK YOU!
